History & Membership

The Society started life in 1884 when a group of the prominent local gentry formed the Chorley Chrysanthemum Society, holding flower shows in Chorley Town Hall & meeting at the Red Lion next door. Through mixed fortunes and two world wars the group evolved into the Chorley & District Gardening Society, its aims being to encourage the cultivation of flowers, fruit & vegetables and to promote the art and science of horticulture

The next meeting is on April 17th when Mike Cunningham will be passing on tips on "Growing & Showing Dahlias"

The following week on Saturday 28th April the Society will be running its annual plant sale at Trinity Hall, Devonshire Road, Chorley from 10.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m.

Our most recent show was the annual flower show early in September last year.  For details see shows and events.

Meetings and talks are held every third Tuesday of the month from 7.30 p.m. at Chorley Cricket Club, Sandringham Road, Chorley and feature a wide range of topics from vegetables to design and wildlife.  Visitors are most welcome - tea, coffee & biscuits are included in the entrance fee of £2 (only £1 when you become a member) and there is a licensed bar.

We celebrated our 125th anniversary in 2009 with a garden party, a recording of Gardeners' Question Time and talks by Matthew Biggs and Roy Lancaster.

Membership fees for 2011 are  £7 for joint and £5 for single membership , payable at the AGM in January.  The Membership Secretary is Pam Greenhalgh who can be contacted at  newsandviews@chorleygardeningsociety.co.uk
